Department of Law

The major of law began to enroll the undergraduates in 1992 and was approved  to offer the master’s degree for environment and resources protection law in 2003, the master’s degree for constitution and administrative law in 2006, J.M in 2009 and the master’s degree for law as the first-level discipline in 2011. Key Lab for Research on Rule of Law under Ministry of Natural Resources was approved in 2012. In 2015, the program of professional degree for J.M was successfully evaluated by  Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it was listed as “Collaborative Education Program for Jingchu Excellent Law Talents”. Now the major of law has 19 full-time teachers, including 4 professors, 1 external professor, 10 associate professors and 4 lecturers. Among them, there are 17 teachers with the doctor’s degree, accounting for 89.5% of total teachers; the middle-aged and young teachers under 45 years account for 80%; 6 teachers has the experience in scholarly exchange abroad; over half of the teachers concurrently act as the vice chairmen, secretary-generals and standing directors of the nationwide and local association of environment and environment protection, economic law, fiscal law, law and economics and local legislation. In recent 5 years, the major of law has rapidly developed in scientific research, talents cultivation and social service. According to “Ranking of Top Subjects in China” issued by a higher education ranking organization Chinaranking, the discipline of law took 104^th place in 2019 and 86^th place in 2020, ranking Top 50%. In 2021, the discipline of law took 97^th place, ranking Top 31% and being listed as B+ in Chinaranking.  

In terms of scientific research, this discipline gives prominence to the research on rule by natural resources law and eco-environment law. The teachers in Department of Law have undertaken 1 key program of the National Social Science Fund of China, 4 general programs of the National Social Science Fund of China, 2 youth programs for Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, 5 programs of Social Science Fund of Hubei Province and 30 other  programs; have been granted one excellent youth fruit award for scientific research in universities under the Ministry of Education, 1 third prize for province-level excellent teaching fruit and 1 third prize for excellent social science fruit in Wuhan City; and have published over 80 academic papers and 11 teaching and research papers in the core journals including China Legal Science, Xinhua Digest, People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, and published 15 monographs and textbooks.

In terms of talents cultivation, the major of law deeply implements the spirits and instructions of the important speech on actively building the legal talents cultivation town, follows the construction goal of cultivating young legal talents for a new era, actively explores and builds “the cultivation mode for well-rounded excellent legal talents for a new era with high comprehensive quality and resources-environment characteristics” in combination with the disciplinary advantages in the resources-environment with the teaching concept of “ strengthening morality education and law concurrently”. Through learning the basic theory and knowledge of law, receiving the basic training in legal thinking and law practice and cultivating the basic capability of parsing the problems with legal theory and method and managing the affairs with the law, the undergraduates can be cultivated into the well-rounded excellent legal talents for a new era for the state organs such as legislative bodies, administrative organizations, procuratorates, courts, enterprises and institutions and the social organizations with solid academic background and strong practice capability. As a key planned and cultivated discipline in CUG, the major of law has a complete talents cultivation system covering the undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students. Over 50% of the graduates pass China’s unified qualification exam for legal professionals and many graduates are enrolled by the famous universities for master’s degree and doctor’s degree, such as Wuhan University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Xiamen University and so on.  

In terms of social service, the major of law actively serves the society and the service industries, fully brings into full play the think tank function of the characteristics major of law, offers advice and suggestions for the formulation of the policies and laws as well as the strategic planning, offers the services for the major national demand such as COVID-19 prevention and control. All of the teachers have participated in the social service and fully provided the intelligent support, with good effects.   

Main courses of this major: Introduction to Xi Jinping Legal Thought, Jurisprudence, History of Chinese Legality, Constitution, Administrative Law and Administrative Procedure Law, Civil Code, Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Economic Law, Criminal Law, Civil Procedural Law, Criminal Procedure Law,  International Law, International Private Law and International Economic Law. It has established the in-campus practice capability cultivation platform such as moot court, legal clinic and the key lab under the Ministry of Natural Resources and over 10 off-campus practice bases including People’s Court of Hongshan District, People's Procuratorate of East Lake Hi-Tech Development Zone, Beijing Jingsh (Wuhan) Law Firm, Hubei Congdao Law Firm. The main practice teaching links: legal consultation, social investigation, pro and con, mock trial, argument for disputed cases, teaching and graduation practice and so on.
