Series of 2021 Freshmen Entrance Education Activities of the School of Public Administration (IV)

Entrance Education – “Utilization of Library Resources”

At 9:30 am on September 8, 2021, “Utilization of Library Resources”, a class for freshmen of Grade 2021 of School of Public Administration, was held in the lecture theatre on the first floor of No. 1 teaching building. Xu Shiqiu, Director of the Library of China University of Geosciences, Wang Qingtao, counselor for graduate students of School of Public Administration, and Li Shuhui, counselor for undergraduates of Grade 2021, attended the activity. The meeting was presided over by Wang Qingtao.

In this freshman entrance education class, Xu Shiqiu first pointed out the importance of the library by quoting the famous saying of Borges, the former director of the National Library of Argentina, as saying, “I had been imagining secretly that the heaven should be like a library.” Then, he made a concrete exposition through three parts, namely: cherishing the university time; making good use of the library; creating a reading life.

In the first part, by introducing the colorful college life to the students, Mr. Xu emphasized that in order to improve a series of qualities such as personality, ability and specialty, we must make good use of the library.

Then, the lecture went to the second part. Mr. Xu cited the examples of famous people such as Marx, Mao Zedong and Edison, telling everyone to make good use of the library. Then, he showed the students the libraries of Nanwangshan Campus and Future City Campus respectively, so that everyone could clearly and intuitively feel the features of our libraries, such as good environment, good atmosphere and abundant literature resources. Mr. Xu also introduced some information about the official website of the Library of China University of Geosciences, including convenient and practical functions such as one-stop search, reading recommendation and document transmission.

The theme of the third part of the lecture is “Creating a Reading Life”. By listing the famous sayings and deeds of Zhang Heng, Mao Zedong, Yang Jiang, Li Siguang and others, Mr. Xu told everyone to read more books and get in touch with books in different fields, “laying stress on the integration of science and technology and humanities”, and talked about his own experience on how to improve the quality and efficiency of reading.

Finally, xu teacher showed his couplets to the students, encouraging them to study hard, read good books and read well, and wishing China University of Geosciences a better future!
