History: The predecessor of Department of Land Resources Management was the teaching and research section of resources and environmental regionalization and management of rural and urban planning established in 1993. In 1998, in answer to the urgent need of the development of land and natural resources management, CUG run the major of land resources management, established Research Institute of Land Resources Management and then established Department of Land Resources Management in 2003. In recent years, it has confronted with the national strategies and the industrial demand and newly opened the major of land reclamation engineering in 2019 based on the excellent school-running conditions, it has newly opened.

Accumulation: Over 23-year’s development, the major of land resources management has formed a complete education system covering the undergraduates, the postgraduates (MPA) and the doctoral students. Through development and construction over 10 years, based on the broad geosciences background and the advantageous geosciences platform, the major of land resources management has made significant achievements in disciplinary construction and talents cultivation. In Apr. 2000, the major of land resources management was listed as the key non-geosciences major among Project 211 disciplines; it was authorized to offer the master’s degree in 2003 and to offer the doctoral degree in 2005; the discipline of land resources management was approved as the key discipline in Hubei Province in Apr. 2008 and was selected as the province-level brand major in 2009. In 2013, as one of the important directions of the public administration as the first-level discipline , the major of land resources management as the second-level discipline supported the first-level discipline, became the key discipline in Hubei Province and was approved to offer the doctor’s degree to support the first-level discipline in 2017. In the same year, in 4th round of China Discipline Ranking, this major supporting the discipline of public administration was evaluated as Discipline B+. in A Report on the Competitiveness Evaluation of Universities and Subjects in China (2018), the major of land resources management was ranked “5★-” at Top 10% in China. In 2019, the teaching team of land resources management was evaluated as the provincial-level teaching team in Hubei Province and the major was selected in the first batch of national class-one undergraduate major.

Faculty members: Department of Land Resources Management now has 24 faculty members, including 6 professors (including 5 doctoral supervisors), 13 associate professors and associate researchers, 4 lecturers and research assistants, 1 engineer and 22 teachers with doctor’s degree. Among them, there are 13 teachers with doctor’s degree, 65% of them have the experience in advanced studies abroad and 9 teachers under 45-years-old. Department of Land Resources Management have a team of faculty members with reasonable structure, high educational level, pioneering spirit and youthful spirit.

Talents cultivation: Department of Land Resources Management now has about 300 in-campus undergraduates, over 160 full-time postgraduates and over 30 doctoral students (including international students). In recent 5 years, the in-campus postgraduates have accumulatively participated in the international and domestic academic meetings and made the academic speeches over 130 person-times.

With the guidance of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thoughts of “'Three Represents”, Scientific Outlook on Development and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as well as the requirements on the all-round development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor education for a new era, the major of land resources management cultivates the well-rounded talents and the successor of the socialist constructors, who have the theoretical foundation of modern management science, economics and land science and 3D technology, are familiar with the guidelines, policies and laws of land management in China and can be engaged in the related technical and management work such as land investigation and evaluation, land development and use, land management, land information system in land resources, urban construction, planning, real estate, mapping, agriculture and so on, so as to make contributions to the human progress and social development. The major of land reclamation engineering cultivates the high-quality application-oriented engineering and technical talents with the theoretical foundation of resources, ecology and engineering, having a good command of the basic methods of soil mass physics, chemistry, bio-reconstruction and water resources allocation, familiar with soil-forming technology, biotechnology, geotechnical, irrigation and drainage technique and land information technology and having the working capability of land engineering survey, planning, design, construction and management.

Orientation: In combination with the national goals and the demand of the national economic development and the industry, the major of land resources management brings into play the advantages of the major, strengthens the construction of the experimental and practice teaching platform and base through the reform of cultivation plan and curriculum system, fully exerts the role of the “Industry-University-Research” talents cultivation base, makes every effort to establish a major with “well-defined cultivation goals, explicit engineering characteristics, rich practice links, complete practice base, superior teaching facilities, optimized faculty members and excellent teaching quality” and with significant demonstration effect in China, and cultivates the students majoring in land resources management with solid professional foundation, strong practice ability and well-round accomplishment. Guide by the construction of ecologic civilization, with the goal of harmonious development of human-nature life community, the major of land reclamation engineering, makes use of the land reclamation and eco-restoration technology, realizes the comprehensive control of mountain, river, forest, farmland, grass and sand and cultivates the professional talents that have a good command of knowledge and skills of land reclamation and eco-restoration, serve the survey, planning, design, construction and management of the land reclamation and eco-restoration, solve the actual problems in the process of engineering planning, design, construction and supervision and have the capability of overall process management and technical application in land restoration and eco-restoration engineering.

Organization: Department of Land Resources Management integrates teaching and scientific research, continuously perfects the undergraduate teaching and strengthens the construction of the professional labs and related research centers as well. As a result, it has established a teaching platform system with reasonable structure, bright characteristics, crossing major directions and advanced experimental environment. Now it is equipped with land survey lab, land planning lab, land information lab and land resources data mining research center. In 2019, it was approved by CUG to establish the comprehensive teaching lab for land restoration and established the industry-university-research base with many employers including Suntop Planning, SouthGIS,  Hubei Yongyehang Appraisal Consulting Co., Ltd, Wuhan Bureau of National Natural Resources Supervision, China Land Survey and Planning Institute, Qinzhou Bureau of Natural Resources, Huizhou Bureau of Natural Resources, Bureau of Natural Resources of Changyang Tu Nationality Autonomous County in Hubei Province and Shenlongjia Forest Region in Hubei Province.
